You forget that WA wasn't always owned by FB and you did once upon a time have to pay for it (which I didn't mind).
Right now the reason I continue to use it is because everyone else I know uses it and are unlikely to use alternatives, it is useful as a cross platform internet based communication service, my mum uses it to talk to some foreign relatives.
